What to Stop Doing Right Now
If the floor already looks dull, resist the urge to add another product on top. Layering polish over dull finish tends to trap dirt and creates the buildup that makes a later refinish harder. Avoid steam mops, oil soaps and vinegar mixes, and use a cleaner made for finished hardwood, lightly damp rather than wet.

Can buffing bring back the shine?
Sometimes. A clean and buff helps floors with healthy finish, but it cannot restore finish that has worn through or remove polish buildup.

If dullness returns quickly after mopping, residue is a common culprit. Switching cleaners and a deep clean often shows whether it is.
